WEP, WPA and WPA2 are different wireless cryptographic protocols used to protect wireless network information. If you don't know the difference between them, you may not know which protocol to choose.
The following are the history and comparison of these protocols. After reading this article, you should know which one to choose.
WEP WPA WPA2
These wireless encryption protocols are created by the Wi-Fi alliance. It is an association of more than 300 companies in the wireless network industry. The first protocol created by the Wi-Fi alliance was the Wired Equivalent Privacy(WEP), which was introduced in the late 1990s.
However, WEP has serious security flaws. It has been replaced by WPA (Wi-Fi protection access). Although it is easy to be attacked by hackers, WEP connection is still widely used. There are still many routers using WEP. The reason is that they have not changed the default security on their wireless access points / routers. Some routers are old, and they can not use WPA or higher security.
As WPA takes the place of WEP, WPA2 has replaced WPA as the latest security protocol. WPA2 implements the latest security standards, including "government level" data encryption. Since 2006, all Wi-Fi certified products must use WPA2 security.
Use WEP/WPA/WPA2 on wireless access point or router
When setting up a router, you are allowed to choose the security protocol you want to use. Of course, this is a good thing, but some people do not want to change it. By default, the router may be set to WEP, and now we know it is not safe. Worse still, the router may be completely opened without encryption and password. If you want to set up your own router, make sure that you use WPA2, or at least WPA.
Use WEP/WPA/WPA2 on the client side
When you first radio signals, the system will prompt you to enter a security key or password. If you input correctly, you can successfully connect to the network. The key or password is the WEP/WPA/WPA2 code you entered into the router when configuring security.
If your laptop is old, you may not be able to connect to the router using the WAP2 protocol. At this point, you will not find the router's wireless signal. To solve this problem, you can only change the router's security protocol to WEP.
