How to Change the default password on the network router
People use specific usernames and passwords to manage wireless routers. In the manufacturing process of routers, one of them is to set default management accounts. These default usernames and passwords are public, and each model may have a different default password.
Let's take the Linksys router as an example to explain how to change the router's default password.
Routers have default passwords, and when you have successfully installed the router, you should immediately change the default password of the router. This increases the security of home networks. But this does not prevent your home network from being attacked by hackers. It only prevents people from destroying your home network, such as neighbors, friends, or others nearby.
This article describes the steps to change the default password on common Linksys network routers. Different types of network routers also have different steps, but their processes are similar. You probably need a minute to finish it.
Login to network router
You can use the default password and username to login to the router's administrative console via a Web browser. If you don't know how to find the IP address of the router, we can help you determine what the IP address of your router is.
The default IP address of the Linksys router is 192.168.1.1. You need to open a web browser and type http://192.168.1.1/ in the address bar. Many Linksys routers do not require any special user name (you can leave it blank or enter any name in the field). In the password field, enter admin or a specific password for router. After you have successfully logged in, you should see the screen as shown below.
Open the "change password" page of the router
In the router's management console, open the page that can change its password settings. Typically, the Manage tab at the top of the screen contains the password settings for the Linksys router. (other routers may keep this setting in the security menu or other locations.) Click the Administration button to open this page, as shown in the figure:
Enter a new password
Choose the right password according to the general rules for strong password security (there are five steps to choose the password). Enter a new password in the Password box, and then enter the same password again in another input box. Most routers need to re-enter the password to prevent you from entering an incorrect password.
The characters in the password input box are hidden, and they are replaced by dots. This is to prevent others from seeing when you enter the password. Do not confuse this password with separate settings of WPA2 or other wireless keys. The Wi-Fi client device can connect the router with a wireless security key. The login password of the router is different from that of the wireless key.
Save new password
Click the Save Settings button at the bottom of the page to enable the new password to take effect. You may see a confirmation window to confirm that the password change has been successfully completed. Now it becomes a new password. Next time you login, you will need to use the new password.
